Del Mar Pines School was founded in 1978 to meet the scholastic needs of kindergarten through sixth grade students.

All classes are open to Del Mar Pines students and students who currently do not attend Del Mar Pines.

Tuition

Tuition includes all materials. Full tuition payment is due at the time of enrollment. Registration and payment are accepted via mail, or you can drop by the office between 8:15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Payment may be made by cash or check. Please make checks payable to Del Mar Pines. No credit cards accepted.

Grade Levels

All levels stated in the class descriptions refer to the grade students will be entering in September 2017.

Withdrawal

If a student withdraws prior to May 15, fifty percent (50%) of the tuition will be refunded. After this date, no refunds will be authorized.

Cancellation Policy

All classes are offered subject to adequate enrollment. If the minimum class size is not met, a 100% refund will be authorized. The summer program coordinator will consider the cancellation of under-enrolled classes by Wednesday, June 14. Be sure your application and tuition have been received by this date.

All classes meet Monday through Thursday. No classes on Friday.

Make-Up Classes: We are unable to provide make-up classes due to student illness or vacation schedules.

Free dress. Closed-toed shoes recommended.

Parents can design a stimulating, creative summer that accommodates their schedules and their child’s unique needs. We offer morning and afternoon programs Monday through Thursday. Science, drama, math, art, writing, technology –– there’s something for everyone! Space is limited. Sign up today!

Summer 2017 Programs

If you would like to extend your child’s learning and enrichment, please note that the same academic skills are taught in Session I and Session II for Del Mar Pines Players, Broadway Bound, Math, Jumpstart Readers, Reading/Writing Workshop, and Response to Literature through Reading and Writing; however, we utilize different plays, books, novels, and essay topics each session.

Students attending classes that end at 12:00 noon must be picked up at 12:00 noon. Students enrolled in both morning and afternoon classes stay on campus from 12:00 – 12:30 p.m. for lunch and supervised play. Students provide their own lunch. Students attending our afternoon classes only arrive five minutes prior to class.

Del Mar Pines Players

Kindergarten and First Grades

Come Ye, Come Ye! Actors and actresses enhance their oral skills by performing in a mini-musical production. Your child will practice singing, listening and memorization talents while learning songs. This course improves visual motor integration skills while working with paint and other art materials. Students will design and craft costumes in anticipations of a final performance for parents and friends.

This is a perfect class for kindergarten and first graders who enjoy acting, singing and drawing. The inherent foundation of the course will emphasize classroom routine, behavioral expectations and productive work habits.


Broadway Bound!

Second through Sixth Grades
M – TH: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon
Session I or Session II: $450

If your child is interested in the arts, they may be Broadway Bound! This program hones the creative process, and offers an opportunity to exhibit a bit of flair! Students will design and build sets, learn lines, master songs, create a script and expand their talents. This small-group setting will improve oral expression, reading and memorization skills. On the last day of the program the course will culminate in a mini-musical production for family and friends. Students are required to commit to the entire session.

Jumpstart Readers

First and Second Grades

Designed to meet the individualized needs of students who have not yet experienced the real joys of reading. Jumpstart Readers focuses on basic skills in an integrative, thematically based curriculum. The course strikes a creative balance between direct, small-group instruction and hands-on activities. It helps students gain confidence as they create, dramatize and illustrate stories, master basic phonics, and read thematic literature from standard readers. All students are tested prior to the class to assess proper placement and individual needs. There is a conference at the end of the program. Some homework is required.

Reading & Writing Explorations

Second Grade

Session I Only: $600

Welcome all in-coming Del Mar Pines second graders to Reading and Writing Explorations. Students will develop several methods of creating effective graphic organizers and use them to create well thought out and detailed papers. In addition to fiction and non-fiction selections, students will experience an in depth novel study. This study will include: vocabulary skills, building comprehension based on concrete evidence from the text, and making real life connections through the development of the plot. During this course, the highly effective 6-Traits Writing model will be used to cultivate the students into strong creative writers. Some homework is required. Del Mar Pines students only.

Reading/Writing Workshop

Third and Fourth Grades

For over three decades, hundreds of students have become outstanding readers, writers, spellers, and thinkers using the comprehensive Del Mar Pines learning system. For the twenty-sixth year, this popular program is available to students who do not currently attend Del Mar Pines School.

Students will discover the joys of literature while learning proven academic formulas for synthesizing ideas and committing them to paper. There is a parent-teacher conference at the end of the program. This is an intensive course with some homework.

Response to Literature through Reading and Writing

Fifth and Sixth Grades

Session I or Session II: $600

This course will build and strengthen reading, writing and language skills. It will also expose students to quality literature and provide a solid foundation for the craft of writing. The class will begin with daily journal writing and instruction in punctuation, mechanics, usage and grammar. Next, students will read an acclaimed novel and participate in high-interest, dynamic class discussions in response to key literary elements and themes.

Students will then be guided through reading comprehension activities, focusing on extracting details and textual evidence to support ideas. Lastly, students will be challenged to write strong active essays through the 6-Traits writing model. This course will prepare your child for language arts classes in the years to come. This is an intensive course with some homework.

Exploring Science Through Art

Third through Sixth Grades

The mutually beneficial connection between science and art was first discovered during the Renaissance period, more commonly referred to as the Enlightenment Era. During our three-week camp, students will simultaneously stimulate the left and right sides of their brain, and facilitate a better understanding of essential elementary level scientific principles. Both art and science enthusiasts will be delighted with our daily assortment of hands-on science experiments. In earth, life and physical sciences. Photography and printmaking are only some of the media and techniques the children will employ to apply their newly found knowledge.

Math Fun

First and Second Grades
M – TH: 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.
Session I or Session II: $200

Students entering first or second grade in the fall will enjoy an adventure in the exploration of math games. Math Games is a game based math class that explores how math applies to the real world. Your child will see how important math is and how much fun solving problems can be. Students will use paper, toys, food, and iPads to create, discover and develop functional math skills and awareness of foundational math ideas. Each child will have access to an iPad for use during the class.

Third and Fourth Grades

Students will enjoy exploring the world of numbers and enhance their mathematical ability through a variety of games and problem solving activities. This class is designed to reinforce, review and extend mathematical concepts, with a focus on problem solving skills in a fun and exciting way!


Engaging Math

Fifth and Sixth Grades

In this game-based class, students will develop positive feelings about math as they improve their confidence, math facts and number competence. Games, computational skill checks, and independent activities all in engaging formats will attract and hold kids’ interest! Topics include mixed facts, mental computation, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and percent’s.


Monart Mixed Media 

Kindergarten through Sixth Grades (Taught by Monart)

Bring art to life! Students of all ages will explore an array of art mediums (e.g. oil, pastels, water color, colored pencils, glue, tissue paper, collage and more). Learn how to combine mediums together with an incredible outcome. This camp will include the Monart drawing method, various art medium techniques and colorful craft projects. All supplies will be provided. Fact sheets will be available with all lessons. (*All classes will cater to all grade levels within each class.)


Mad Science Robot Recruit

Kindergarten through Third Grades (Taught by Mad Science)

Join Mad Science for an introduction to robots! Throughout the weeks, campers will become robot engineers as they build a unique motorized robot that transforms into four unique creatures, each increasing in difficulty. Discover the inner workings of robots by experimenting with circuits, gears, sensors and power supplies. Learn about robot programming and the different tasks robots perform in our world. Experiment with sound sensing, line tracking and solar powered robots. Take home projects include: EM4 Robot, Bugbot, Robot Hand and more!


Mad Science Brixology

Second through Sixth Grades (Taught by Mad Science)

This summer put your hardhat on and step into the shoes of an engineer with the all-NEW Brixology Camp powered by aerospace, mechanical, automotive, structural and nautical engineering. Through hands on construction projects using LEGO® bricks, teams of students will complete engineering projects of varying difficulty levels. They will learn about aerospace engineering while assembling a space station, explore mechanical engineering while building boats and vehicles, and discover nature’s engineering secrets while investigating bio mimicry. But that’s not all –– from carnival rides to drawing machines, mechanical animals to truss bridges, your future engineer will have a blast exploring all the wonders the world of engineering holds. Take home projects include: Peacock Puzzle, Truss Bridge and many more.

This class is perfect for anyone who uses a computer at home or school. Students will learn basic keyboarding and become more accurate, confident and efficient. We emphasize touch-typing skills and exercises to strengthen fingers. Students will learn to type with proper technique and to increase their speed and accuracy.

Kindergarten through Second Grades

Students will participate in a variety of Weekly theme-based activities including read alouds, games, snacks, take-home projects and other creative fun!


Mad Science Crazy Chem Works

(Taught by Mad Science)
Kindergarten through Fourth Grades
M – TH: 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.
Session I Only: $200

Shake up a flask of fun in the lab and become a junior chemist! Learn to recognize chemical reactions and mix up a few reactive ingredients for some sensational results. Check out the colors of chemistry with the power of pH paper and create a stopper-popping reaction. Probe the properties of light and discover some unusual applications of glow-in-the-dark technology. Campers have a blast as they make some crazy concoctions. Take home projects include a reaction tube kit, atomic coins, thermocolor cup, slippery slime, Professor Beakerdude and more! Camp will be conducted by Mad Science of San Diego.


Mad Science Adventures in the Wild

(Taught by Mad Science)
Kindergarten through Fourth Grades

Take a walk on the wild side with Mad Science as we explore animals, birds, bugs and beasts for an out of this world adventure! Have some creepy, crawly fun building a bughouse and fill it with new friends to take home. Explore the amazing ways animals adapt in the wilderness as you hunt down their tracks and make an animal track of your own. Discover what a night-hunting owl found for dinner by taking part in an owl pellet dissection. Let the adventure begin! Take home projects include a bughouse, animal track, sundial, solar cooker and more!


Ukelele

Second through Sixth Grades
M – TH: 1:30 –2:30 p.m.
Session I Only: $200

Do you like to sing and would love to play an instrument? Here’s your chance to learn how to play the ukulele. We will cover basic music theory, chord progressions, chords and strumming patterns as we learn to sing traditional, Hawaiian and pop songs. You are welcome to bring your own ukulele to class. Ukeleles are also available for use at school. There will be a short concert at the end of our session. It’s cool, easy and fun! A music book will be provided. Class size is limited to 15 students.

Chess

Kindergarten through Sixth Grades

International Chess Master Larry Evans and staff teach in over forty schools throughout San Diego. Children come from all over the world to study at their summer camp in Lake Arrowhead. Over the past twenty-five years, their program has produced many champions. The 2nd highest ranked chess player in the world today participated in their program during his formative years. The former U.S. 5th Grade Champion has been their student from his beginning as well. The Evans Method of instruction utilizes fun tools (like a giant chess set) and positive reinforcement to reward enthusiasm and participation. Every child gets prizes and a trophy!

Chess at Del Mar Pines is geared for kindergarten-sixth graders. Children will learn how to play chess, learn about proper piece movement and value in a fun colorful way. The focus is on piece movement strategy and how to achieve different ways to checkmates.

Google CS First: Intro to Computer Science

Third through Sixth Grades (8+ age)

Explore the world of computer science and coding! Students will create interactive stories and design video games in this Google CS First Computer Science Class.

Google CS First empowers all students to create with technology. Students will learn how to build creative, interesting projects through programming based on real world themes in which students use the computer to create interactive stories or design games. The two themes covered in Session 1 are “Storytelling” and “Game Design”.

In Storytelling, students use computer science to tell fun and interactive stories. Storytelling emphasizes creativity by encouraging club members to tell a unique story each day.

In Game Design, students learn basic video game coding concepts by making different types of games, including racing, platform, launching, and more!


Google CS First: Computer Science

Third through Sixth Grades (8+ age)
M – TH: 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
Session II Only: $400

Explore the world of computer science and coding! Students will create music and complex animated projects. This is an advanced curriculum and is recommended for students who have completed two other Google themes (or completed Session 1 Google CS First).

Google CS First empowers all students to create with technology. Students will learn how to build creative, interesting projects through programming based on real world themes in which students use the computer to create interactive stories or design games. The two themes covered in Session 2 are “Music and Sound” and “Animation”.

In Music & Sound, students use the computer to play musical notes, create a music video, and build an interactive music display while learning how programming is used to create music.

In Animation, students create fun and complex animated projects, using more advanced concepts and project building tools.


Golf

Kindergarten through Fourth Grades

Join The Southern California PGA in Schools program for a summer of fun! Our golf camps offer an unforgettable experience for your child by combining expert instruction and exciting activities. The program provides ample individual attention and proper instruction for your child. Golf lessons incorporate life skills and academic subjects, along with golf components. All equipment is provided. The class is limited to 12 students. Taught by PGA instructors.


Super Soccer Stars

First – Third Grades
M – TH: 12:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Session II Only: $400

At Super Soccer Stars, the soccer ball is used as the vehicle to help children not only improve their soccer skills, but also to develop self-confidence, improve gross motor skills and hone socialization skills in a fun, non-competitive, educational environment.

The Super Soccer Stars staff is professionally trained and qualified, holding USSF or NSCAA Youth soccer licenses.


Circus 101

Fourth through Sixth Grades
M – TH: 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
Session I Only: $400

It’s your turn to run away with the circus. In this course you will explore the basics of clowning, juggling, and partner acrobatics. Start to understand the techniques of building your own circus routine, and be inducted into one of the oldest performing traditions. Dress to Move.

Juggling: Learn to manipulate objects into a routine. Great building block of coordination, focus, and determination.

Clowning: Explore the world of physical theatre, while learning the building blocks of comedy.  We will study how the “gag” works, and how to write comic material.

Partner Acrobatics: Giving and taking weight of a partner is key in this circus art. Work on creating shapes with counterbalance, and strength to defy gravity and look like Cirque du Soleil. The class will give a performance at the end of the session.


Comedy/Improv

Fourth through Sixth Grades

Session II Only: $400

Think you’re funny? This class introduces students to the fun of improvisation for the stage. Explore the world of acting, while learning the building blocks of comedy and improve. The class will also promote self-confidence and work on the ability to stand in front of an audience. We will explore different ways to create characters and use our sense of humor to unlock the comedy in any situation. A super fun class where anything is possible! At the end of the session there will be a presentation.
