Morning/Afternoon Class Schedule

Del Mar Pines Players

Kindergarten and First Grades

Come Ye, Come Ye! Actors and actresses enhance their oral skills by performing in a mini-musical production. Your child will practice singing, listening and memorization talents while learning songs. This course improves visual motor integration skills while working with paint and other art materials. Students will design and craft costumes in anticipations of a final performance for family and friends.

This is a perfect class for kindergarten and first graders who enjoy acting, singing and drawing. The inherent foundation of the course will emphasize classroom routine, behavioral expectations and productive work habits.


Broadway Bound!

Second through Sixth Grades

If your child is interested in the arts, they may be Broadway Bound! This program hones the creative process, and offers an opportunity to exhibit a bit of flair! Students will design and build sets, learn lines, master songs, create a script and expand their talents. This small-group setting will improve oral expression, reading and memorization skills. On the last day of the program the course will culminate in a mini-musical production for family and friends. Students are required to commit to the entire session.

Jumpstart Readers

First and Second Grades

Designed to meet the individualized needs of students who have not yet experienced the real joys of reading. Jumpstart Readers focuses on basic skills in an integrative, thematically based curriculum. The course strikes a creative balance between direct, small-group instruction and hands-on activities. It helps students gain confidence as they create, dramatize and illustrate stories, master basic phonics, and read thematic literature from standard readers. All students are tested prior to the class to assess proper placement and individual needs. There is a conference at the end of the program. Some homework is required.

Reading & Writing Explorations

Second Grade

Session II Only $650

Welcome all in-coming Del Mar Pines second graders to Reading and Writing Explorations. Students will develop several methods of creating effective graphic organizers and use them to create well thought out and detailed papers. In addition to fiction and non-fiction selections, students will experience an in depth novel study. This study will include: vocabulary skills, building comprehension based on concrete evidence from the text, and making real life connections through the development of the plot. During this course, the highly effective 6-Traits Writing model will be used to cultivate the students into strong creative writers. Some homework is required. Del Mar Pines students only.

Reading/Writing Workshop

Third and Fourth Grades

For over four decades, hundreds of students have become outstanding readers, writers, spellers, and thinkers using the comprehensive Del Mar Pines learning system. For the twenty-eighth year, this popular program is available to students who do not currently attend Del Mar Pines School.

Students will discover the joys of literature while learning proven academic formulas for synthesizing ideas and committing them to paper. There is a parent-teacher conference at the end of the program. This is an intensive course with some homework.

Response to Literature through Reading and Writing

Fifth and Sixth Grades

This course will build and strengthen reading, writing and language skills. It will also expose students to quality literature and provide a solid foundation for the craft of writing. The class will begin with daily journal writing and instruction in punctuation, mechanics, usage and grammar. Next, students will read an acclaimed novel and participate in high-interest, dynamic class discussions in response to key literary elements and themes.

Students will then be guided through reading comprehension activities, focusing on extracting details and textual evidence to support ideas. Lastly, students will be challenged to write strong active essays through the 6-Traits writing model. This course will prepare your child for language arts classes in the years to come. This is an intensive course with some homework.

Bats, Birds & Butterflies

Third – Sixth Grades

Did you know there are 1,200 different species of BATS?!? From the Bumble-bee Bat to the Flying Fox, students will have a blast learning about these remarkable creatures each week! This thematic study will integrate children’s literature as well as non-fiction texts, creative writing and hands-on learning. This class will include all kinds of fun and creativity through project-based learning, crafts, and whimsical stories that showcase these species. Project examples include but are not limited to: building bat houses, bird houses, milkweed gardens, research posters, and so much more!!!

Math Fun

First and Second Grades

Students entering first or second grade in the fall will enjoy an adventure in the exploration of math games. Math Games is a game based math class that explores how math applies to the real world. Your child will see how important math is and how much fun solving problems can be. Students will use paper, toys, food, and iPads to create, discover and develop functional math skills and awareness of foundational math ideas. Each child will have access to an iPad for use during the class.

In this game-based class, students will develop positive feelings about math as they improve their confidence, math facts and number competence. Games, computational skill checks, and independent activities all in engaging formats will attract and hold kids’ interest! Come one, come all, boys and girls join our fun Zumba fitness, dance, and movements program. International dances, rhythms, cultures, music and movements are introduced. For example, Latin, Hey Pop and Bollywood to mention a few. Zumba routines incorporate interval training by alternating fast and slow rhythms. Experience its benefits as fun aerobic exercise. Crank up the music as children of all shapes, sizes and ages will gather together and dance their hearts out. Zumba’s dance workout is one of the most popular group exercise classes in the world.


Monart Mixed Media

Bring art to life! Students of all ages will explore an array of art mediums (e.g. oil, pastels, water color, colored pencils, glue, tissue paper, collage and more). Learn how to combine mediums together with an incredible outcome. This camp will include the Monart drawing method, various art medium techniques and colorful craft projects. All supplies will be provided. Fact sheets will be available with all lessons. (*All classes will cater to all grade levels within each class.)


Mad Science All Stars (Taught by Mad Science)

Join Mad Science for an introduction to robots! Throughout the weeks, campers will become robot engineers as they build a unique motorized robot that transforms into four unique creatures, each increasing in difficulty. Discover the inner workings of robots by experimenting with circuits, gears, sensors and power supplies. Learn about robot programming and the different tasks robots perform in our world. Experiment with sound sensing, line tracking and solar powered robots. Take home projects include: EM4 Robot, Bugbot, Robot Hand and more!


Mad Science Brixology (Taught by Mad Science)

This summer put your hardhat on and step into the shoes of an engineer with the Brixology Camp powered by aerospace, mechanical, automotive, structural and nautical engineering. Through hands on construction projects using LEGO® bricks, teams of students will complete engineering projects of varying difficulty levels. They will learn about aerospace engineering while assembling a space station, explore mechanical engineering while building boats and vehicles, and discover nature’s engineering secrets while investigating bio mimicry. But that’s not all –– from carnival rides to drawing machines, mechanical animals to truss bridges, your future engineer will have a blast exploring all the wonders the world of engineering holds. Take home projects include: Peacock Puzzle, Truss Bridge and many more.


Exploring Crafts

Keyboarding

Third through Sixth Grades

This class is perfect for anyone who uses a computer at home or school. Students will learn basic keyboarding and become more accurate, confident and efficient. We emphasize touch-typing skills and exercises to strengthen fingers. Students will learn to type with proper technique and to increase their speed and accuracy.

USA Jump Stars promotes jump rope as a means of creating a healthy body and mind while developing personal values, team spirit and sportsmanship through competition and live performance. Did you like the movie “Jump In”? Learning competitive jump rope tricks are challenging, fun and great exercise! This class will teach single rope, Chinese wheel, two persons on rope, traveler, double Dutch, and long rope. Jump ropes are provided for class and available for purchase to take home. Beginner to Advanced. Bring a smile and we will teach you to jump rope! Wear work out clothing and good jumping shoes.


Mad Science Jr. Detective (Taught by Mad Science)

First through Fourth Grades

Session I Only $250

Learn code language to send secret messages as part of your mission. Use special spyglasses to help learn about surveillance and the important role it plays in security. Investigate a pretend crime scene and sift through clues to crack the case. As part of the Mad Science Bureau of Investigation you will gain observational skills that are used by secret agents. Take home projects include a secret code breaker, whodunit kit. Scene solver, spyglasses and more!


Mad Science Operation Invention (Taught by Mad Science)

First through Fifth Grades

Session II Only $225

We’ll take you on a journey of discovery through the real-life inventions of da Vinci, Edison and the Wright brothers! You will be challenged to recreate some of the most important and exciting inventions of all time; including catapults, bridges and light bulbs! Next, overcome a series of challenges using basic materials, tips from famous inventors and the most important tool of all – your mind! Finally, you will be tasked with dreaming up inventions of your own! While Thomas Edison said, “invention is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration” this camp is 100% FUN! Take home projects include a harmonica, catapult, Circuit Maze, message in a bottle and much more!


Ukelele

Second through Sixth Grades

Do you like to sing and would love to play an instrument? Here’s your chance to learn how to play the ukulele. We will cover basic music theory, chord progressions, chords and strumming patterns as we learn to sing traditional, Hawaiian and pop songs. You are welcome to bring your own ukulele to class. Ukeleles are also available for use at school. There will be a short concert at the end of our session. It’s cool, easy and fun! A music book will be provided. Class size is limited to 15 students.


Monart Mixed Media

Chess

Kindergarten through Sixth Grades

International Chess Master Larry Evans and staff teach in over forty schools throughout San Diego. Children come from all over the world to study at their summer camp in Lake Arrowhead. Over the past twenty-five years, their program has produced many champions. The 2nd highest ranked chess player in the world today participated in their program during his formative years. The former U.S. 5th Grade Champion has been their student from his beginning as well. The Evans Method of instruction utilizes fun tools (like a giant chess set) and positive reinforcement to reward enthusiasm and participation. Every child gets prizes and a trophy!

Chess at Del Mar Pines is geared for kindergarten-sixth graders. Children will learn how to play chess, learn about proper piece movement and value in a fun colorful way. The focus is on piece movement strategy and how to achieve different ways to checkmates.

Google CS First: Intro to Computer Science

Third through Sixth Grades (8+ age)

Explore the world of computer science and coding! Students will create interactive stories and design video games in this Google CS First Computer Science Class.

Google CS First empowers all students to create with technology. Students will learn how to build creative, interesting projects through programming based on real world themes in which students use the computer to create interactive stories or design games. The two themes covered in Session 1 are “Storytelling” and “Game Design”.

In Storytelling, students use computer science to tell fun and interactive stories. Storytelling emphasizes creativity by encouraging club members to tell a unique story each day.

In Game Design, students learn basic video game coding concepts by making different types of games, including racing, platform, launching, and more!

*Bring your own earbuds/headphones.


Google CS First: Computer Science

Third through Sixth Grades (8+ age)

Session II Only $450

Explore the world of computer science and coding! Students will create music and complex animated projects. This is an advanced curriculum and is recommended for students who have completed two other Google themes (or completed Session 1 Google CS First).

Google CS First empowers all students to create with technology. Students will learn how to build creative, interesting projects through programming based on real world themes in which students use the computer to create interactive stories or design games. The two themes covered in Session 2 are “Music and Sound” and “Animation”.

In Music & Sound, students use the computer to play musical notes, create a music video, and build an interactive music display while learning how programming is used to create music.

In Animation, students create fun and complex animated projects, using more advanced concepts and project building tools.


Golf

First through Fourth Grades

Join The Southern California PGA in Schools program for a summer of fun! Our golf camps offer an unforgettable experience for your child by combining expert instruction and exciting activities. The program provides ample individual attention and proper instruction for your child. Golf lessons incorporate life skills and academic subjects, along with golf components. All equipment is provided. The class is limited to 12 students. Taught by PGA instructors.


Archery Champs

Second through Sixth Grades
M – TH: 12:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Session II only $450

Archery Champs is dedicated to passing on the values of determination, hard work and personal growth. They believe that these values are crucial to master in order to be leaders and innovators who solve the puzzles of the 21st century. The program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn archery in a safe environment. Each day every student will learn and practice a new archery skill and then finish the day off with an exciting game like Exploding Balloons, Archery Tic Tac Toe or Simon Says.

Students will also discover history through the eyes of the archer! Archery has a long history of helping to defend oneself and provide food. The Archers will share their medieval long bow, load and launch a baseball in a catapult, inspect arrowheads and how the bow and arrow was developed through the years to become the sport that it is today

All classes are open to Del Mar Pines students and students who currently do not attend Del Mar Pines.

Tuition

Tuition includes all materials. Full tuition payment is due at the time of enrollment. Registration and payment are accepted via mail, or you can drop by the office between 8:15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Payment may be made by cash or check. Please make checks payable to Del Mar Pines. No credit cards accepted.

All levels stated in the class descriptions refer to the grade students will be entering in September 2018.

Session Options

If you would like to extend your child’s learning and enrichment, please note that the same academic skills are taught in Session I and Session II for Del Mar Pines Players, Broadway Bound, Math, Jumpstart Readers, Reading/Writing Workshop, and Response to Literature through Reading and Writing; however, we utilize different plays, books, novels, and essay topics each session.

Students attending classes that end at 12:00 noon must be picked up at 12:00 noon. Students enrolled in both morning and afternoon classes stay on campus from 12:00 – 12:30 p.m. for lunch and supervised play. Students provide their own snack, bottled water and lunch. Students attending our afternoon classes only arrive five minutes prior to class. PICK-UP… there will be a $1 per minute late fee after 5 minutes late.

Withdrawal

If a student withdraws prior to May 15, fifty percent (50%) of the tuition will be refunded. After this date, no refunds will be authorized.

Cancellation Policy

All classes are offered subject to adequate enrollment. If the minimum class size is not met, a 100% refund will be authorized. The summer program coordinator will consider the cancellation of under-enrolled classes by Wednesday, June 13. Be sure your application and tuition have been received by this date.

Calendar

All classes meet Monday through Thursday. No classes on Friday.
Session I: June 18 – July 5 (July 4, No school)
Session II: July 9 – July 26
Make-Up Classes: We are unable to provide make-up classes due to student illness or vacation schedules.

Attire

Free dress. Closed-toed shoes recommended.
