Enrichment Classes Fall 2019

Del Mar Pines offers an impressive variety of after school enrichment programs to accommodate busy parents’ schedules as well as curious students’ minds and imaginations.

Available classes range from athletic programs such as fencing, gymnastics, yoga, and dance to artistic and academic opportunities including woodworking, band, clay sculpture, STEM, art, sports & more. Class schedules change three times a year: fall, winter, and spring, allowing our students to experience multiple disciplines.

Woodworking (3rd – 6th)
Sheila Dawson’s mobile woodshop classroom (30′ bus) is coming back to DMP. Beginning or experienced for an extended time of woodworking 3:15 – 4:45 p.m. (90 minutes). Many projects are suitable for Holiday gift giving. This is a practical and productive class where children learn basic hand tool construction of assorted toys (rolling, floating, flying) and many useful desktop projects. All materials are provided as well as safety eyewear for each student. Returning students will be encouraged to progress to more complex construction ideas depending on their interests and skill level. Mondays: 3:15 – 4:45 1 ½ hour classes. Nov.4, Nov. 18, Dec. 2, Dec. 9, Dec. 16, (No class 11/11 or 11/25)

Grades 3 – 6. The maximum enrollment is 8 for this class.

$200 for 5 classes includes all materials

Chess (K – 6th)

The game of chess helps children learn the critical and abstract concepts of planning, analysis and strategy. Chess participation helps students to learn the positive experience to:

  • practice mental gymnastics • sharpen analytical and observation skills
  • build self-confidence • develop self-learning tools
  • evaluate & decision-making process • experience competition with others
  • plan, logic and analysis • achieve the importance of behavior management

Learning to play chess will be very useful in many aspects of life. It improves the ability to concentrate and teaches the value of good sportsmanship, plus making good choices and considering all possibilities.

Mondays: 3:15 – 4:15 p.m. One-hour classes. Sept. 16, 23, 30, Oct. 7, 21, 28, Nov. 4, 18, Dec. 2, 9.

$180 for 10 classes.

Choir (K – 6th)
The “Del Mar Pines Singers” choir is a great success and will continue through December. All students are encouraged to join as part of this ensemble directed by Mrs. Goetsch. Students practice warm-ups, sight singing, vocal technique and singing in two-part harmony as they prepare for December concerts at the Brookdale Senior Home and the Winter Talent Show. Choral music and rehearsal CD included.

Tuesdays: 3:15 – 4:00 p.m. 45-minute class. 9/17, 9/24, 10/1,10/8, 10/15, 10/22, 10/29, 11/5, 11/12, 11/19, 12/3, 12/10 (No class on 11/26)

Lift Cooking Class (K – 5th)

Kids will learn to cook Mediterranean classics in this fun, hands-on cooking class. We teach kids to expand their palates, try new foods and learn a variety of fast easy recipes they can make at home. Develop your culinary confidence and learn from professional chefs.

All recipes are nut-free & have vegetarian options. A digital cookbook with all of the recipes from this class will be emailed to all the participants so you can recreate the recipes at home. On the last day of class, parents are invited to our Kid Restaurant, where the parents can see what their kids learned during the session. Get hungry to learn the art of cooking!

Wednesdays: 3:15 – 4:15 p.m. One-hour classes. Sept. 18, Sept. 25, Oct. 2, Oct 9, Oct 16, Oct 23

Grades K – 4th. The minimum enrollment for this class is 8.

Fun with Numbers (K – 3rd)

Do you just love Math and can’t get enough?! Do you have a hard time understanding why it even exists? Have you been struggling with math? Here at Club Xcite, we understand that every student learns differently, and that not everyone loves math. And even if you do, there’s still room to love it more! Club Xcite’s after school enrichment program has been designed to touch on the standards of the specified grade levels through projects and activities that allow students to gain mastery over critical thinking concepts. Our goal is to encourage students to connect with mathematical concepts on a deeper, real-life level, in a fun and engaging way! Projects may include: 3 Geometric Constructions – Learning to Measure & Draw to Scale – Solving Puzzles & Word Problems – Engaging in Critical Thinking Games and more.

Wednesdays: 3:15 – 4:15 p.m. One-hour classes. Sept. 18, Sept. 25, Oct 2, Oct 9, Oct 16, Oct 23, Oct 30, Nov 6

Grades K – 3rd. The minimum enrollment for this class is 8.

Paul Effman Music Service Del Mar Pine’s Band (1st –4th)

Band is offered to students, with or without experience, in grades 1st and 2nd for Violin only and 3rd– 6th violin and other instruments. Half hour small group lessons are offered after school on Wednesdays. Lessons begin at 3:05 p.m. with groups to follow. Del Mar Pines AfterCare is available at the student’s expense for those who would like to stay on campus before and after their scheduled class time. Paul Effman Music Service handles fees and the registration form.

Wednesdays First class 9/25/19

**This is an ongoing class and continues through the end of the school year**

Dance Fitness (K – 6th)

No experience required. Come one, come all, boys and girls, join our fun fitness, dance, and movement program. Exercise helps promote a positive mood, improve memory retention, and keeps kids active. This dance class incorporates moves and stretches that could be beneficial in playing team sports. in this class, kids will learn about the benefits of moving – it will increase your child’s flexibility, range of motion, physical strength and stamina. The repetitive movements involved in dance can improve muscle tone, correct poor posture, increase balance and coordination and improve overall cardiovascular health as well as learning to dance to any rhythm. It is truly designed to bring a creative fitness and yoga inspired program to children of all abilities in a non-competitive environment. Students will also be taught “The Thriller Dance” as performed by Michael Jackson.

Fitness expert Julia Hubara is a fitness instructor and has taught at Crunch, UCSD, Sony, Qualcomm, JCC, plus others.

Thursdays: 3:15 – 4:15 p.m. One-hour class Sept 19, 26, Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24, Nov. 7, 14, 21. No class 10/31

Grades K – 6. The minimum enrollment for this class is 5; maximum 12.

Challenge Island: World Tour (1st – 6th)

Pack your suitcases for Challenge Island’s all new World Tour! You and your tribe-mates will engineer your way around the globe – from the Eiffel Tower to the SydneyHarbor Bridge to the Taj Mahal to an African Safari. Each challenge will bring us to a different geographical destination and provide a special Challenge Island taste of the local flavor. Please join us for this not to be missed Challenge Island global adventure!

Challenge Island is a cross-curricular, highly engaging enrichment program in which students take “island adventures” without ever leaving the classroom. Our programs support developing social emotional 21st century skills, in an inclusive and engaging learning environment. At core, we focus on exploring cross-curricular STEAM concepts, but we do so much more! Our program provides kids with a unique format to solve ‘Challenges’ in a project-based learning methodology encompassing critical thinking, problem solving, team ‘tribe’ work, and yes, promoting a scientific and creative mindset. For each session, children are given challenges to solve using everyday materials. Most challenges have several solutions, allowing kids of every age to solve the problems at their own level. Challenge Island programs allow children time to step away from their screens and into their imagination.

Grades 1 – 6. The minimum enrollment for this class is 12. The students are grouped into Tribes for even more fun.
