Enrichment Classes Fall 2020

Del Mar Pines offers an impressive variety of after school enrichment programs to accommodate busy parents’ schedules as well as curious students’ minds and imaginations.

Available classes range from athletic programs such as fencing, gymnastics, yoga, and dance to artistic and academic opportunities including woodworking, band, clay sculpture, STEM, art, sports & more. Class schedules change three times a year: fall, winter, and spring, allowing our students to experience multiple disciplines.

Chess (K – 6th)
The game of chess helps children learn the critical and abstract concepts of planning, analysis and strategy. Chess participation helps students to learn the positive experience to:

  • practice mental gymnastics
  • sharpen analytical and observation skills
  • build self-confidence
  • develop self-learning tools
  • evaluate & decision-making process
  • experience competition with others
  • plan, logic and analysis
  • achieve the importance of behavior management

Learning to play chess will be very useful in many aspects of life. It improves the ability to concentrate and teaches the value of good sportsmanship, plus making good choices and considering all possibilities.

Soccer Superstars (K – 4th)
At Super Soccer Stars, it is our goal to teach soccer skills in a fun, non-competitive, educational environment. Our philosophy is to use soccer to nurture, build self-confidence, and to develop teamwork in every class. Our specially designed curricula use positive reinforcement and a low child
toc coach ratio ratio to ensure that each child improves at his or her own rate while having endless fun. Each participant receives a t-shirt.

Math Olympiad Club (4th – 6th)
Mondays: 3:15 – 4:15 p.m One-hour class. Ongoing since fall. Held in second grade Classroom
Choir (K – 6th)
This is an ongoing class. The “Del Mar Pines Singers” choir is a great success and will continue through May. Students practice vocal techniques and singing in two part harmony as they prepare for the Spring Sing Concert held on May 8th.
Tuesdays: 3:15 – 4:00 p.m. 45-minute class. This is an ongoing class from the Fall. The first class is Jan. 14th. The last class will be May 5th.

Lift Cooking Class (K – 5th)
Kids will learn to cook Asian classics in this fun, hands-on cooking class. Our Chef Teacher will take kids on a culinary journey through Japan, China and Thailand as we combine food, culture and science. Includes a digital cookbook and a Kid Restaurant for parents on the last class.
Menu: Spring Rolls, Homemade Sushi Rolls, Ramen Noodles, Orange Chicken, Pineapple Fried Rice, Pad Thai Noodles and more!
Wednesdays: 3:15 – 4:15 p.m. One-hour classes. Jan 15, 22, 29, Feb 5, 19, 26, March 4, 11

Grades K – 4th. The minimum enrollment for this class is 8 and the maximum is 15 students.

Paul Effman Music Service Del Mar Pines’ Band (1st –4th)
This is an ongoing class through the end of the school year. Paul Effman Music Service handles fees and the registration form.

Youtube Sensations (3rd – 6th)
Want to become the next YouTube superstar? Join us and learn how to write scripts, act, film and edit as you make a positive impact with your creative video ideas! Students will work together to choose their projects which they will share with friends and family up to two weeks after the completion of the class. Some Projects may include: Writing Scripts, Creating Documentaries, Interviewing, “How to” videos, Music Videos, Basic Filming & Editing Techniques **NOTE: No videos will be posted on YouTube by club Xcite.**
Wednesdays: 3:15 – 4:15 p.m. One-hour class Jan 15, 22, 29, Feb 5, 19, 26, March 4, 11 (No Class Feb 12)

Mandarin for Chinese Natives (K – 6th)
Come join us at Del Mar Pine’s new HanBridge Chinese Program. We will use a well-implemented academic and activity-based curriculum which stays away from the strict/traditional ways of teaching by making learning fun! In this class we will focus on reading, Chinese (tang) poetry and writing Chinese characters.
Thursdays: 3:15 – 4:15 p.m. 75 minute classes Jan 16, 23, 30, Feb 3, 20, 27, March 5, 12, No class 2/13

Grades K – 6. The maximum enrollment for this class is 8. Minimum 4.

Instructor: Yany iLi, director of HanBridge Chinese Academy and a native Chinese speaker. She has been tutoring students since 2017

e2Young Engineers (K – 4th)
Through the use of intriguing stories, exciting experiments and building originally designed LEGO models that illustrate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematic (STEAM) subjects, your child will have fun enriching their world in the STEAM fields while developing fine motor, visual-spatial and social skills using motorized Lego. We will teach basic mechanical engineering with real life examples.

How to Draw Animals (2nd – 6th)
This is a great opportunity for serious artists to have fun drawing their favorite animals while enhancing their observational drawing skills. They will be learning about a variety of drawing tools and techniques. The class will cover ratios and proportions, and giving the illusion of volume by correctly applying shading techniques. Students are encouraged to bring photographs of their favorite animals
