Why We Believe Every Child Deserves To Be Known

Dear Prospective Families,

When you walk your child through our doors, our staff and I get to know them well. We get to understand how they learn best: whether they're a reader who devours stories, a builder who thinks in three dimensions, or a dreamer who sees possibilities others miss. We learn what makes them laugh, what frustrates them, and exactly what kind of encouragement brings out their best self.

Because we are a small school, we are a family, everyone looking out for each other.

We were founded in 1978 on a simple but radical belief: every child deserves to be known. Not as a student ID number or a grade in a spreadsheet, but as a whole person with their own gifts, their own pace, their own journey. Nearly fifty years later, that belief guides everything we do. Our nurturing classes aren't just a feature; they're the foundation of who we are.

I've had the privilege of working with hundreds of children here since 1990, and I can tell you with certainty: there is no substitute for knowing your child deeply. It changes what's possible in their learning, their growth, and their happiness. Teachers who know them advocate for them. They adapt lessons to reach them where they are. They see potential that they might have overlooked in themselves. And your child feels that care. They will feel seen and heard every day. And that will enable them to develop at their own pace, learn what they are capable of, and succeed in what they set out to do.

We get to know every student individually at Del Mar Pines.

Though our students do excel academically, Del Mar Pines education is not just about academics. We believe that character matters as much as curriculum. We're intentional about nurturing human beings, not just test takers. Through our outstanding ancillary programs, which include music, art, Spanish, hands-on science, technology, physical education, and library, your child learns to think creatively, collaborate genuinely, and solve problems that haven't been solved yet. They learn resilience, kindness, and what it means to be part of a community.

We're a family here. Parents know each other. Teachers celebrate students' growth. Older students mentor younger ones with real responsibility and real heart. Schoolwide events bring our families together. Your child won't be one of many; they'll be one of us.

I don't just run this school. I know every single one of your children. I open car doors in the morning. I attend all parent-teacher conferences. I read students' writing. I see their art on our walls. I watch them grow from budding kindergarteners into confident, independent, compassionate sixth graders ready to take on the world. That personal investment isn't something I delegate, it's core to who I am and what we do here.

By choosing Del Mar Pines, you're choosing a place where your child will be nurtured academically and emotionally. Where they'll develop not just knowledge, but character. Where they'll leave us not just prepared for the next school, but prepared for a life lived with purpose, creativity, and kindness.

I would love to meet your family and show you what we've built here. I think you'll feel the difference the moment you arrive.

Warmly,

Marci McCord
