Dear DMP Community,

It is hard to believe that we are in the final weeks of the 2019/2020 school year. None of us could have imagined the year ending as it is with a pandemic and school closure, but I feel like we have all made the best of the situation by being flexible, adaptable, and willing to do what was necessary to continue our children’s education during this time. I want to thank you all for your hard work and determination as we all worked through this together!

For the past seven years, we have asked parents to complete the DMPParentSurvey2020. This anonymous survey is run through Survey Monkey and is an important way for us to evaluate our programs, school, curriculum, and this year, our remote teaching. We need and value your input and feedback, so PLEASE take some time to give us your thoughts/input. The first 50 questions deal with the entire school year, while questions 51 – 57 focus on remote teaching since March 13th. Our goal is to have at least 100 parents complete the survey. Please take some time to reflect on this year and give us feedback to help us improve our school for the coming year. Only 8 parents have completed the survey so far, so we really need to hear from YOU!

Before I get to the remainder of our schedule for the last 5 days of school, I would like to announce two fun events coming up. In order to complete the year in a special way, we will be hosting a Zoom “Final Flag Salute” Tuesday, June 9th at 8:30 am. All are invited to this event where we will say the Pledge of Allegiance, I will give a short speech about this year, we will have an at-home “Step Up Ceremony” where I will promote the students to their next grade, and then we will end with the song, “Party in the USA” that the students were practicing for Spring Sing. Since we can’t all be together, we feel this is the best option to end the year. I will share a link with everyone next week.

Due to our school closure on March 13th, our sixth-grade students were not able to perform their class musical, “Theseus and the Minotaur”. With the help of Mrs. Goetsch, they are resilient and figured out how to perform a condensed version of the play through Zoom. We will be having a community presentation of their musical on Wednesday, June 3rd at 4:00 pm for anyone who would like to watch.

Here is a reminder of the schedule for the last 5 days of school. Regular classroom/group teaching schedule will continue through Wednesday, June 3. In order for teachers to assess their students, we are asking parents to come and drop off all work on Thursday, June 4 between 8:00 and 3:00. Teachers will be writing report cards and summative reviews and completing student portfolios on Friday, June 5, and Monday, June 8. There will be no live teaching or assignments on these days. Students can work on any ancillary assignments that they were not able to finish or participate in other online activities (ie. Epic books, IXL, Prodigy, Achieve 3000, SmartyAnts, etc.).

On Tuesday, June 9  teachers will be emailing parents their child’s report card for the third trimester by 4:00 pm. Also on Tuesday, June 9 between 9:00 and 3:00, parents are invited to come and collect their children’s portfolios with work from September through March, our DMP Yearbook, year-end gifts from their teachers, and to clean out their children’s desk. Parents are welcome to drop off any notes or thank yous to the teachers on this day if they wish.

We are planning to have a very small Graduation ceremony outside on the field for our sixth-grade graduates and their immediate family only on Wednesday, June 10 from 10:00 – 10:30. We will be live-streaming the ceremony for anyone in the community who would like to attend virtually.

Finally, we have an incredible school and community, and I hope you will want to share your experiences with other families in our area.  If you would be so kind as to provide a recommendation and share your experiences here, we would be grateful.

 With appreciation,

Marci McCord
